Employer Contribution

  • 10.00% of the employer’s emoluments must be contributed to the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC)
  • 1% of the employer’s emoluments must be contributed to the Industrial Injuries Compensation Fund (IICF)

Employee Contribution

  • 5% of the employee’s emoluments must be contributed to the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC)
  • Value-added tax (VAT)

    The standard VAT rate is 15% in The Gambia.

    Basic food goods, educational and financial services, and certain imports are zero-rated in The Gambia.

Paid Time-Off

Employees are generally entitled to 21 days of paid annual leave in The Gambia.

Sick Leave

In The Gambia, workers are entitled to accumulate days of paid sick leave provided for by Joint Industrial Council Agreement, collective agreement, or otherwise by his or her contract of employment up to a maximum of the entitlement attainable by any twelve months of employment.

Maternity Leave

Women in The Gambia are entitled to maternity leave with 100% regular pay for up to 6 weeks.

Paternity Leave

There is no statutory paternity leave in The Gambia.

  • Unless tacitly renewed or prolonged, an employment contract is terminated on expiry in The Gambia.
  • The minimum notice period is 14 days.
  • A contract of employment for an unspecified period may be terminated by either party on giving the other party the following minimum period of notice in written where: –

>Wages must be paid at a monthly rate, 1 month’s notice.

>Wages must be paid at a fortnightly rate and the employee has been employed for less than six years: 1 fortnight’s notice.

>The employee must have been continuously employed for at least six year: 1-month notice

  • For employees with less than 2 years of service, a one’s week notice is provided, and the wages must be paid at a weekly rate.

Employees in The Gambia are entitled to severance pay that equals 6 months of salary after one year of service (half of their annual salary)
