Geographic location: Found in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, Rwanda is a relatively small landlocked country.

Population: Of its approximate 13 million inhabitants, most of Rwanda’s population speaks Kinyarwanda. English, French, and Swahili (Kiswahili) are also spoken by the locals.

Economy: Rwanda has a small but growing market with a relatively strong economic growth. With strong efforts to maintain its economic growth post-pandemic, Rwanda aims at becoming a Middle-Income Country by 2035. For the time being, subsistence agriculture and mining are major economic pillars of this country, supplemented by tourism and tea and coffee exports.

Employer Contribution

  • 5.00% of the employee’s emoluments must be contributed to social security.

Employee Contribution

  • 3.00% of the employee’s emoluments must be contributed to social security.
  • Value-added tax (VAT)

    The standard VAT rate is 18% in Rwanda. Some goods and services are zero-rated in the country.

Paid Time-Off

Employees are generally entitled to 18 days of paid annual leave. An additional day is granted for every 3 years of service up to a maximum of 21 days of paid leave.

Sick Leave

In Rwanda, workers are entitled to up to six months of sick leave – providing a medical certificate is submitted to the employer. If the sick leave exceeds 15 days, the employer is free to require that the medical certificate be signed by three recognized medical doctors. However, only the first 3 months are paid.

Maternity Leave

In Rwanda, women are entitled to a maximum of 12 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Paternity Leave

In Rwanda, men are entitled to 4 consecutive days of paid paternity leave.

  • In Rwanda, indefinite-term contracts can be terminated for just cause – in which case, a written notice should be provided to the employee, except if dismissal is due to grave misconduct.
    Notice periods in Rwanda are as follows:
    · < 1 year of service: 15 days’ notice
    · > 1 year of service: one-month notice

Employees are entitled to severance pay in Rwanda. The remuneration is regulated as follows:

  • < 5 years of service: 1 month’s salary
  • 5 to 10 years of service: 2 months’ salary
  • 10-15 years’ service: 3 months’ salary
  • 15-20 years’ service: 4 months’ salary
  • 20-25 years’ service: 5 months’ salary
  • > 25 years’ service: 6 months’ salary
  • New Year’s Day (1st to 2nd January)
  • National Heroes’ Day (in Rwanda) (3rd February)
  • Tutsi Genocide Memorial Day (7th April)
  • Good Friday (10th April)
