Geographic location: Sierra Leone, officially the Republic of Sierra Leone, is a country on the southwest coast of West Africa. It is bordered by Liberia to the southeast and Guinea surrounds the northern half of the nation.

Population: The country provides access to a market of more than 50 million people thanks to it belonging in the Mano River Union.

Economy: Sierra Leone’s economy is based on subsistence agriculture, which provides employment for over 80% of the country’s labour force. Sierra Leone has great potential with rich soil and plentiful rainfall. Sierra Leone has the additional advantage of being rich in natural resources such as diamonds and other minerals. Employer Contribution

  • 10.00% of the employer’s emoluments must be contributed to social security.

Employee Contribution

  • 5.00% of the employee’s emoluments must be contributed to social security.
  • Value-added tax (VAT)

    Sierra Leone makes use of a GST (Goods and Services Tax) instead of VAT.

    The standard rate is 15% in Sierra Leone – applied to the supply of goods and services both local and imported.

Paid Time-Off

Employees are generally entitled to:

  • 19 days of leave for employees between 1 to 5 years of employment
  • 22 days of leave for employees between 5 to 10 years of employment
  • 28 days of leave for employees with 10+ years of employment

Sick Leave

In Sierra Leone, workers are eligible to at least 5 days of paid sick leave per year.

Maternity Leave

In Sierra Leone, women are entitled to a maximum of 12 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Paternity Leave

There is no statutory paternity leave in Sierra Leone.

In Sierra Leone, an employment contract can be terminated for just cause. After 2 written warnings, the employee is not eligible for compensation and can be dismissed without remuneration.

In Sierra Leone, severance pay varies between 30 and 40 days for each consecutive year served under the same employer.
