Geographic location: Sudan is a Northern African country bordering the Red Sea.

Population: Sudan’s population (estimated at around 44 million, accounts for approximately 0.56% of the total world population. Sudanese Arabic is the most spoken language in the country though the official languages are Literary Arabic and English.

Economy: Agriculture is the most important sector to the country’s economy, and it also accounts for most of the employment rate among its citizens.

Employer Contribution

  • 17.00% of the employer’s emoluments must be contributed to social security.

Employee Contribution

  • 8.00% of the employee’s emoluments must be contributed to social security.
  • Value-added tax (VAT)

    • The standard VAT rate is 17% in Sudan.
    • A special rate of 30% is imposed on telecommunication services.
    • Certain activities are zero-rated in the country

Paid Time-Off

Employees are generally entitled to:

  • 21 days of paid annual leave for 1-3 years of employment
  • 25 days of paid annual leave for 3-15 years of employment
  • 30 days of paid annual leave for 15+ years of employment

Sick Leave

In Sudan, workers with less than 2 years of service are generally entitled to 6 months’ sick leave. Once they accumulate 2+ years of service, employers are entitled to 12 months’ sick leave.

Maternity Leave

In Sudan, women are entitled to 90 days of fully paid maternity leave as well as 45 days for breastfeeding while working half days.

Paternity Leave

There is no statutory paternity leave in Sudan.

  • The notice periods in Sudan are as follows:

    • 1 month by either party for an employee in continuous service of the employer for one year or more
    • 2 weeks for an employee after continuous service of an employer for six months to one year
    • 1 week for an employee with seniority of less than 6 months.

Under the Social Security Act of 1990, any employee who has spent a period of service with his employer of not less than three years shall be entitled to full severance pay to be calculated as follows:

  • > 3 years of service: the employee is entitled to severance pay equivalent to his basic monthly wage for each year of service
  • > 10 years of service: the employee is entitled to severance pay equivalent to one and a half of his basic monthly wage for each year of service of the following five years
  • > 15 years of service: the employee is entitled to one and three-quarters of their basic wage for each additional year of service provided that the severance pay does not exceed their basic wage for 36 months.
