Democratic Republic of Congo Country Overview

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is also informally known as Congo-Kinshasa by its locals. 

Geographical location: DRC is located in Central Africa and is among the largest countries on the continent. This position gives the country a strategic advantage as a stepping-stone to the Central African region.

Population: DRC has a large population of over 92 million people, which is a sizeable workforce for development, and a potential source of competitive advantage. 

Economy: The Democratic Republic of the Congo is rich in natural resources such as wood, coffee and oil, as well as various minerals such as diamonds, gold, copper, cobalt, tin ore and coltan. The Democratic Republic of the Congo also has some main economic hubs: Kinshasa (its capital), Haut-Katanga and Lualaba provinces, and North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri, Bas-Uele, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo provinces.

Employer Contribution

  • 5-6.5% of the employer’s payroll must be contributed to the National Insurance Fund (INSS).
  • 1%-3% of the employer’s payroll must be contributed to the National Office for Professional Training (INPP)
  • 2% of the employer’s payroll must be contributed to the National Office of Employment (ONEM)

Employee Contribution

5.00% of the employee’s salary must be contributed to social security.

  • Value-added tax (VAT)

    The standard VAT rate is 16% in the DRC. Exports and assimilated transactions are zero-rated in the country.

Paid Time-Off

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, every worker over the age of 18 is entitled to at least 1 day of paid annual leave for every month of consecutive service. This amount can increase by one day per month every 5 years of service under the same company.

Sick Leave

There is no statutory sick leave in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but some employers allow their workers to take some paid sick leave.

Maternity Leave

In the DRC, women are entitled to a maximum of 14 weeks of paid maternity leave. The mother is entitled to 2/3 of her regular wage during her maternity leave.

Paternity Leave

Men are entitled to 2 days of paid paternity leave in the DRC.

  • In the DRC, both the employer and the employee can terminate the employment contract, but termination cannot be done freely and is subject to a strict procedure.
  • Fixed-term contracts always end by the expiration of the term for which they were initially concluded.
  • Any premature termination of fixed-term contracts makes the employee eligible for compensation.
  • The notice period is equal to 14 workdays as from the day after the notification, when the notice is given by the employer – unless stated otherwise.

There is no statutory severance pay in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
