Key Takeaways from Our Payroll and AI Podcast

by Alex Daruty | Sep 23, 2025 | Business Expansion, Compliance, Payroll

Payroll is no longer just about calculations. It is becoming a driver of business strategy. That was the central theme of our recent podcast discussion with Pete Tiliakos, Global Payroll Expert, together with Kevina Takoordyal and Alex Daruty from Africa HR Solutions.

Here are some of the most important insights from the conversation:

1. Are employers ready to adapt?

AI can transform payroll with predictive analytics, anomaly detection and real-time insight. But as Pete highlighted, many companies are not ready yet. Clean, reliable data and cloud-based systems are essential before AI can be effective.

2. Payroll professionals are becoming advisors

Kevina explained how her team’s role has shifted. Instead of just processing data, payroll consultants are now using insights to advise clients, identify risks, and improve efficiency. This blend of human expertise and AI support is changing the profession.

3. Global vs local realities

Payroll may be global, but it is always delivered locally. Pete pointed out that Africa’s 54 countries all have different rules, systems and timelines. Some require digital filings, while others still demand paperwork in person. Success depends on respecting these differences and combining technology with local expertise.

4. Compliance is non-negotiable

Both speakers agreed that payroll errors are not just an inconvenience. They can lead to legal penalties, reputational damage, or even the inability to operate in a country. Using AI for compliance monitoring is one of the most promising opportunities ahead.

5. The future is human + AI

While AI will continue to reshape payroll, the human touch remains vital. Empathy, cultural understanding and local knowledge cannot be automated. The best results will come from combining people and technology.

This conversation made one thing very clear:
The future of payroll is both smarter and more human. For organisations expanding into Africa, the right mix of technology and local expertise will be key to managing risk and supporting growth.
